I'm glad you added the wink.
Seriously, Sauron is Black and Gandalf is White.
The Emperor and Vader wear black continously.
Light is White (setting aside rules of the spectrum) and Dark makes things Black.
Just a few examples.
Nurses are dressed in white, preasts are dressed in black.
??? books are covered in white, bibles are covered in black.
I think, white and black are cultural rather than have anything with races to do.

Like Yin and Yang, which represents the two sides of a mountain - the sunny side, and the dark side (luke, i am your father).
These modern notions of racism should not be used to analyse the concepts of chess...it's just silly.

maybe you need to be a little more open minded Dragon fire; you say it is not racist yet the fact white always moves first could be viewed upon as racist. it was actually a white person who pointed out to me it is racist because of white's superiority at the start. you're far too narrow minded Dragon Fire, you've stated it is not racist and that's tha ...[text shortened]... you'll see it's a little more complex than that, it's only a shame your gameplay cant be
This nonsense, seeing racisim in everything is what makes people racist.
Am I racist because I wear a white shirt? Are builders racist when they paint walls white? Perhaps they should paint them black! My hi-fi is black, my fridge is white but which one was designed by a racist?
I don't see racism in everything I see and do. I play chess against blacks, I drink with blacks, I will have blacks around to my house and I employ them when they are best for the job. Simple. They are people just like you and I and I judge them all (as does everyone I know) as people not on their colour. Some blacks are bone idle, ignorant jerks but so are some whites - I won't mix with such people but don't you dare call me a racist because I shun such a black man when I will treat an ignorant white just the same.

I said that was my opinion. Honestly. I said Black COULD be good, but that with all the examples of darkness being evil, I prefer to think that white, purity, and Jesus represent good.
CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?
I haven't read every post here, so forgive me if somebody else already gave this answer. It carries with it the unimpeachable reference of "something I read on the internet." I found the story on the site of some British chess club but it'd probably take hours to find it again. Apparantly it was established that white was to get the first move at a time when the opposing pieces weren't usually black at all but red. There was such a preference for the much more attractive red pieces that, to make things more fair it was decreed that the player with the plain looking white pieces would at least be allowed to move first.
There it is for what it's worth. If you can verify that it's true, or that it's a load of hooey, that would be cool.
