I was trying to show my son how to win with queen and king against king. I came into this position and couldn't figure out how to draw the king away from the pawn. If I try to bring the king down then he'll just push in and queen. I wound up letting him take my pawn so I could show him something I did know how to do.

it's not wise to always check.

block the pawn and bring the king in.

Move your queen in the way of the pawn's promotion square. Then get your king into action.

Qf2 then the black king has to go to d5 or e5. If d5 play Qf4 or if e5 start to bring your king down and play Qf4 next move.

NHEHOQFT

(noone has ever heard of QFT)

If the pawn was about to promote then you would harass the king until he was forced to the promotion square and then move the king in - rinse - repeat

but like was said above... Queen goes to the Queening square until the king can help capture the pawn.

Irrespective of who is to move whites next move is Qd1 then bring the King up and black must eventually lose the pawn.

It was white to move. I was in a hurry to show him the king queen against king that I overlooked the obvious.
