§ 4 Using chess programs(my emphasis)
1.
Using chess programs outside of the machine-rooms to play or to support play is forbidden. The server and software programs monitor whether players use chess programs.
They are not restricting all forms of task switching; just the use of chess-specific software.

I mean I don't know, but they should, right? That's why I use them anyway.
I wasn't sure about reporting only "task switching" being legal or not, but if they can specify the other programs, then it's almost for sure illegal.

I said no such thing; it's just a generic observation. Touchy, aren't we?
for the discussion though I agree the method of reporting only taskswitching looks effective for the casual cheater. and it does make sense when we compare it with otb play. comparisons such as opening a laptop during otb don't work, but the fact that you aren't supposed to walk out of the tournament hall is relevant to the topic.
I wonder if they only check for task switching when it's your move? If I'm playing a game with a long time control on playchess.com I'll quite often surf the net whilst I'm waiting for my opponent to move, yet I've never received any warning. On the other hand, this might because my games are always unrated - I don't pay to use playchess.com and so am unable to play rated games.
Originally posted by diskamylI'm not exactly sure how they do it, but my bet is that you have to open a port [allow it through the firewall] just to connect to the server to play, and once that's done, they can check your task list.

I don't believe that Playchess actually detects which programs are being taskswitched - I think they're only detecting the switching.
Of course, I can't prove my belief. I'm just forming my opinion on the sysop chat I observed over a period of time. (Yeah, I know, all the sysops could have been lying, it could all be one huge, elaborate disinformation conspiracy, yada yada yada.)
