What's your experience? Do you get better quality games from you clan challenges or from tournaments? Who's more likely to not finish a game: clan players or tournament players--in your experience. I'm deciding if I want to join a clan or just play in tournaments. I don't want a lot of games (I like quality over quantity), but when I do play them, I'd like it if the games were finished. I'd like to hear what you have to say about clans and/or tournaments.
Thanks for your attention.
Right now I'm playing whomever I can to get me to 20 games. I'd prefer to only play people close to my Elo or higher (so I can improve my game), but the open invites thing is spotty at best. That's my major consideration for joining a clan or playing in tournaments. Am I misguided in my thinking? What are your thoughts/experiences?
Neither one has very many games that don't complete. Tournaments give you a range of opponents unless you stick to only the banded ones. In clan games I am almost always paired with someone within 30 rating points of me. Personally I would advise you to join a clan and enter all banded and duel tournaments.
As you only want 20 games, I would reccomend a friendly clan. Take this senario for example: You join a tourney, and for some unforseen reason you win your section. Wonderful! Now you can look forward to the next round. However, that could be a while, for there is always a slow player or two in every tourney. So, to pass the time until the next round of that tourney, you join another one, bringing you back to your limit. You do this enough times you could have several second rounds suddenly start on you, flooding you with games. Not good. This has happened to me several times, and trust me, it's annoying. Having too many games only makes you play faster and perhaps causes more losses.
However, if you find a friendly clan you can be assured that you will always have the number of games you wish to have, or thereabouts. Also, in more communicative clans you can often find people to discuss your games with, or games in general, and improve your play. I still enter the occasional tourney, but get most of my games from clans.
If you don't want to be accidentally flooded with games, make sure you never advance in the tourneys, join a clan, or stick to open invites.
Originally posted by zebanoWhat I mean by "20 games" is: I've only completed 11! I'm unable to join tournaments until I get to 20. I don't want to play 20 games at a time, anyway. I'd prefer to stick to 8 or less, so I can focus on studying chess and a life outside of RHP. I'm already addicted, that's why I'm a member. 🙂
The correct answer is both. Skip the 20 games, join every tournament you can and a prolific clan. Play 100+ games at the same time. You will be addicted to RHP in no time at all!
Originally posted by pinkthunderThen I would definitely say joining a clan should be your choice. The trick would be finding a clan that is okay with your small game load, so probably no one on page 1. You would probably want a smaller clan with an active leader. (If your clan leader is inactive then you may not get games when you want them!) I'd give you suggestions, but then I wouldn't be able to keep myself from promoting my own semi-successful clan, so I'll leave the research up to you.

Originally posted by pinkthunderI believe that's only true for banded tournaments.

If you want to play people around your own playing strength, and you want to have control over how many games you get, I'd say a clan is the way to go. You can still join a tournament once in a while if you wish.
Originally posted by thesonofsaulLol! I won't make any suggestions either, just a little tip for your research - sometimes you need to look sideways to find the right clan. 😉

Originally posted by pinkthunderWith a total gameload of 8 I reckon tournaments as no clan would want an inactive member and a total of 8 games is inactive
