"To have a knight planted in your game at K6 is worse than a rusty nail in your knee." --- Bogoljubow

Can anyone tell this rookie what the K6 that Bogo refers to means?

It's the notation used before algebraic. For instance Pawn to king-4 is equivalante to e4 and was written P-K4. 1.c4 would be 1. P-QB4 (pawn to queens bishop 4), you get the idea...

Hence, he is talking about having a knight planted at e6.

Edit: it's called descriptive notation.

Or e3 if you're playing Black.

Howard Staunton wrote it "Knight to the King's 6th." It time it became Kt-K6, and later N-K6.

Others have answered your question. Another GM - I think it was Capablance - also said that if if he got the knight on K7 or Q7 (the central seventh rank) he'd sit back and let the game win itself. It's a commanding position and one I aspire to. I can get to K6 or Q6 for a while but an unassailable knight on the central 7th rank should be any chess player's ultimate wet dream.
