Some things I picked up from great players.
Some need a grain of salt 🙂

Lucena: build a bridge
Damiano: in most king pawn's openings it's a bad idea to defend your e5 pawn with f6
Greco: a bishop on c4 hitting f7 can be menacing
Legall de Kermeur: pretty mate with 2 N's + B,can be used as opening trap
Philidor: pawns (and their structure) are important
Staunton: avoid battle with a superior force
Anderssen: material means nothing
Morphy: develop asap, open lines, pawns are not THAT important
Steinitz: the king can fight
Tarrasch: when facing a queen's gambit you must get c5 in at some point
Lasker: bad moves can win you the game (already knew this since I make so many bad moves and still win sometimes, but it was nice to see it confirmed by such a great player)
Nimzowitsch: blockade!
Capablanca: chess is easy
Alekhine: there's always some hidden combination waiting to be found
CJS Purdy: the Purdy system
Tal: Alekhine x 10
Donner: preparation is bull, intuition and talent will always prevail
Petrosian: long term exchange sacs (I have yet to acomplish one succesfully but at least I'm looking for them)
Karpov: don't look for trouble if you can win without risk

Interesting thread, Ajuin. With the following three alone you're singing loud and clear to one old patzer's choir:

Philidor: pawns (and their structure) are important.

Nimzowitsch: blockade!

Staunton: avoid battle with a superior force.

yes, very interesting, i would add

Motwani - there is a lot to be said for originality in chess
Fischer - do not be afraid to introduce those original ideas

Perhaps the veteran general of the white armies should consider slapping

his lonesome horsie on b5 and redeploy it to a more salubrious square.

apart from the pawns are the soul of chess remark, I would be disappointed if Philidor hasn't mentioned me.

nobody likes to mention a draw. 🙂

Steinitz: They'll take my extra pawn away once they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.
Lasker: Psyching the opponent out is not a cheap, futile tactic, but works at the highest level.
Capablanca: I'm too lazy to actually work at this game.
Alekhine: Dude, check out this 12-move combination that I played blindfolded.
Botvinnik: Hey, FIDE, can I have another rematch?
Tal: Can you withstand the power of my bionic STARE?!
Petrosian: I'm such a badass, I win by moving pieces backwards.
Fischer: I sleep with a pillow under my chess book, I'm THAT hardcore.
