I will claim a win on time from anybody who feels they can take advantage of me by simply turning on their vacation flag! 😲

If any opponent feels that this is incorrect, READ MY PROFILE!!!

I clearly state that I do not feel that I should be jerked around by people because they CAN NOT move within the specified time limits! 😠

In the past, I didn't claim a win on time when my opponent had his/her vacation flag set... Well, guess what? I found myself paired against class A players who simply refused to move when they were losing... AND, because I respected their vacation flag setting, I saw theri rating go from a high Class A down to the 1500's! In one case I had outplayed a fellow Class A opponent in 3 out of 4 games! BUT, because they didn't care about what was going on at RHP, their rating dropped 300 points!

So even though I won 3 out of 4 games, I lost a bunch of rating points! 😠

Several people have voiced concern and recommended that RHP have a rating floor. This idea seems to fall on DEAF EARS! (Russ, get off your butt and DO SOMETHING!)

I realized (after losing hundreds of rating points) that my only recourse is to time them out.

I think we should all push fr RHP to HAVE A RATING FLOOR! As many other players have recommended!

Vacation Flags? we're supposed to respect those?

I rarely do.. guess I'm just not a sportsman.. feel free anyone to time me out regardless of vacation flag status.. I guess if I was playing in a non-tournament, or non-clan game I might, but I haven't had one of those games in a long time.

It would work fine if either almost everyone respected vacation flags or no one did. The problem was that you were the only one who did.

<rant>Sometimes people do go on vacation or have something come up that keeps them away from the computer for a week or two unplanned. When it comes down to it, what do a few hundred rating points really matter, play people up near your old rating and you'll get them back soon enough. Anyway its just an online chess site, the ratings don't have a whole lot of meaning, not only does no one know who you are or care, but with free use of books and databases and illegal but still too common use of chess engines from what I hear, the ratings are fairly meaningless. Sure it indicates generally who is the stronger player, but what does it really matter. Why not be happy being one of the few nice guys on the site instead of getting all worked up and using capital letters over your rating.

And before anyone brings it up, yes I have called game timeouts on a few people but I hadn't really thought about it as any different than an OTB time control. Reading your post I realized this could be unfair, what if someone had to go into the hospital or something. Anyway, from now on I will not time out anyone with a vacation message up unless they make moves in games other than mine while continuing to ignore my game, then they are ignoring me and should have just hit resign. Otherwise I will try to be a nice guy and cut people some slack, I wish more would do the same. </rant>

It may sound harsh, but if my opponents time expires....

BOOM, sayonara, regardless of flags or explanations.

It's a cruel world.

The difficulty with a ratings floor is that there are some players who as you say lose interest - or appear to lose interest, in the games that they are losing. This tends to make their ratings graphs look like a mountain range as they accumulate losses they haven't resigned. A player who does this would then end up with a minimum rating higher than that of an 'honest' player who takes their wins and loses at the 'natural' rate. So you may be giving people who do this a cushion. You could try recalculating ratings every 30 or so games, or base them on the ratings at the start of a game - but this would cause problems too as you could get someone on the way up, and end up losing to a 2000 player whose rating started out at 1000..

Where I think a ratings floor would be useful is for entry to banded tournaments. You could make it 400 points lower than the players all time high. Occasionally people resign their games wholesale, for perfectly good reasons, and end up with ratings 800 odd points below their true strength. They are then able to enter these tournaments which isn't really fair on the people they were designed for. I topped out at 1792 so under this system I'd be barred from tournaments with a top cutoff lower than 1392.

You didn't really lose rating points. You just didn't gain as many as maybe you should have. And it'll balance itself out over time anyway, as if your rating is higher, then you don't gain as many points in other games, if you know what I mean.

I would just like to take this moment to thank all of you who did not time me out while I was in Hawiaii for the last 2 weeks.
I had a great time and I am back now.
My internet is totally down at home because they buried a new cable while I was out. It will not be up for a few more days. So I had to wait until I got to work to move.

And to Arrcrackass: Suck a lemon! Loser!

Hahhahahahahahaha!

Having the ratings calculated using the initial ratings when the game started should be used. That way if someone with a 1600 rating challenges you, thats the rating they should use after you win or lose. This and a combination of rating floor should be used just like how its done for OTB chess.

Because seriously, when someone challeges you or you accept an open invite what do you look at ? Their rating!! and thats the rating you expect to earn points from if you win.
