If the player doesn't have a return date on his flag, then I'll probably time him out. Or if his flag's on and he's making frequent moves in other games, then ditto.

If you subscribe you shouldn't really be claiming wins.

By not claiming a win you are not losing points, you are just allowing the game to take its natural course.

The only possible time when you could claim a win is a defensive tatic. ie You are going to lose, or there is a chance your opponent will be able to claim a win against you soon. It these cases your victory will be as hollow as stealing sweets from a baby.

Your rating should be a measure of your skill level rather than your ability to catch your opponent whilst he takes a holiday.

What if you are about 1700, and your 1800 opponent who was beating you goes away. He drops to 1500 because of timeouts, but you didn't take one, then he beats you. You ARE losing points by not taking the timeout.

Playing within time constraints is also part of the rating.. no different then an OTB tournament that has a time limit.. if the person runs out of time, he loses

Your rating will shrink by more, however the player could fall 300 points in the course of the game without going away and still beat you. The fact is you lost and your rating will fall.

C'est la vie.

Are we plaing chess or are we working on our ratings? If someone asks me to play a game of chess with them I don't expect to be times out for missing a day or two. Weeks...ok But really -- aren't you here to PLAY chess?

Tournaments are different. Clan games, etc. But if you've just struck up a game with someondy -- shouldn't it be to actually PLAY chess? Taking a quick time out, with no email or anything -- that's just "playing ratings".

Me, I'd rather play chess.

I only play tournament and clan games mostly, so that is why I time them out immediately.

I just want to say that in June I went on vacation. I let everyone that I was playing know in advance that from this date to this date I will be gone. Every single player honored my flag. Of course I was not taking advantage of it either. It was a cool thing. Im a very low level player & I do have a life outside of RHP so ratings don't matter much to me anyway. I think some people here get so caught up in this or that it is just a FREAKING game. I think the key is to just enjoy the FREAKING game of chess. LOL well that is my 2cents. Manny aka The Menace.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about ratings: I time people out because I like the games of chess I play to finish occasionally - and if I find out the person I'm playing is slower than a tortoise walking the wrong way up an escalator, I simply won't play them again.
