The advertisers seemed to try to include a racial message, even a very subtle one

Hey, it might be encouraging black kids to play chess. Nothing's wrong with that!
I don't agree that the kid is the only black person in the room, many people don't show up well on camera, and if you watch the crowd there may be 2 or 4 people who may be black. I watched it again and that's my thoughts after viewing who shows up on camera.

There might be 1 or 2 around 16 seconds, and in the background when the kid makes his move.

you guys are getting pretty silly with that 'political correctness' nonsense there.
Because if the kid was white, he wouldn't have written "little white kid..." Nor would he have written "little kid from Central Daylight Time" or "kid who has two sisters..." He described the boy by race because he thought the kid's race was pertinent when it was immaterial; that's what makes it racist.

No, i think he said "little black kid" because, seriously, how many of us imagine a 12 year old black kid playing chess, let alone beating kasparov? Not to say there aren't black chess players but i think it is uncommon, that is why he pointed it out.

Yellow boy carries a stigma because of it's history of usage. Black boy doesn't. It's that simple.

If we can't call him little black kid what can we call him? Vertically challenged African American minor?

This might be true, I don't know. Again, I was more alarmed by the racist banter you will find at YouTube for this movie.

Are you white? Seriously, racism is so backwards now that blacks and women have more rights than white men - especially true with college and admissions.

BTW:I find your "little joe" stuff offensive.

Oh please. Cry me a river about the poor oppressed white folk.

The only reason the thread title was offensive is that it points out race when it is irrelevant.

Heck, I didn't even watch the movie πŸ˜›

Actually it's difficult to keep up. OOPS! I must be a racist.

Why not just say 12-year-old or whatever his age is? What does race have to do with it? And yes, "black boy" is a phrase with a great deal of negative history behind it.

The racism is identifying a non-white person by race when you wouldn't identify a white person by race in the exact same circumstances.
