Modern Chess Openings has been the standard English language work on chess openings for over a century. I have the 14th edition that De Firmian revised, love it.

Nunn's Chess Openings is far better, although I don't use it either. I have ECO and a multitude of databases.

I used to own both MCO-14 and NCO. I always looked up stuff in MCO first, and if I couldn't find what I wanted (or didn't like what I found), then I'd use NCO. MCO is a lot easier to read, but NCO has a lot more variations.

I have them both but use MCO far more than NCO as I find it easier to use.

    Horses for courses I suppose!
