I have it.
The book seems pretty good, but the most recent reprint is in old descriptive notation which there's no excuse for.
I struggled through parts of the book but haven't read it in any depth.

Sacriledge!
I see three big advantages to descriptive over algebraic:

-when going over games in descriptive notation things 'stick' better

-books in descriptive are cheaper

-it has a nice, romantic feel to it 🙂

His series on strategy in Chess, I think there are three
inpired a whole genration.

A lot of what he wrote will still hold water today.

Never like his opening books, but yes get this one.

Good book, and I agree, I tend to remember stuff better in descriptive notation.

I can't understand descriptive. Must be a "I've only been playing a couple of years" thing.

I have the original 3 books purchased early 1980s. At their time they were very good and strongly recommended. Even if they haven't been updated much but they are cheap they are probably worth getting as a lot of the basic strategic ideas still hold water and all that will be missing are modern examples.

As for descriptive, I prefer it and still record most of my OTB games in descriptive although am trying to change but constantly relapse.

i picked it up second hand - have to admit found it quite heavy going, especially with the descriptive notation - never really got into it - appears i am in minority tho...

I've had a copy of this book since 1973. Many of the lines analyzed are out of date as you would expect for a book published in 1963, but the strategic concepts are not. As far as descriptive notation is concerned, anyone intelligent enough to play chess ought to be able to switch from algebraic to descriptive. Get the book.

Hi DF

"I prefer it and still record most of my OTB games in descriptive

I thought descriptive banned - or is that just for FIDE rated events.

When I castle I write the word 'zOOm' and 'zOOOm' for Q-side.
That is me telling myself the opening is over so let's get stuck in.

I started doing it in Troon '82 though there I wrote trOOn.
I did it for a laugh and won my first 5 games!

So ever since then I've always done it, simply replacing trOOn with zOOm.

I've been told I can get pulled up for this.

(I've also been told ,by the 'witty ones' that I should write 'resigning sOOn.'😉 🙁

It should be reprinted in modern algebraic though.
Even most of the more experienced players at my club have made the switch after 20 or so years.
Maybe the title should be changed to "Old Chess Strategy"?

Did someone call me?

Should I write castles as greenpOOn34? Sounds inappropriate.

hi there seems to be two books with this title,

Attack and Defence in Modern Chess Tactics, and

Modern Chess Tactics: Pieces and Pawns in Action

which one, or are all good?
