I think the controls are 40/1 then add 1hr for next 20 moves. Not sure about after 60 moves. No increments.
Edit: 60 Moves in 2 hours; 20-40 moves in 4 hours?
Originally posted by Green PaladinOn digital clocks you get extra time per move, usually thirty seconds. Some games in tournaments last for nine to sixteen hours, it's a competitive hall sometimes.

Originally posted by ketchuploverI think it's two hours for the first 40 moves, then as you said 1 hour for the next 20 moves. Carlsen - Shirov has taken almost exactly six hours for 60 moves. After 60 moves I think they get 30 minutes for the rest of the game.

That Carlsen-Shirov game seems to have inspired my opponents on ICC tonight:

Notice that they both played the same variation of the Ruy Lopez that Shirov tried, I wasn't familiar with it (I'm not really much a Ruy player), luckily they both ended up with the same fate as Shirov. 😛

Wait a second...did Carlsen miss a devastating move at his move 30 with 30.Rxc3. Crafty says it's sound and it seems to simply put white up a piece!

Certainly not easy to see that it actually was good, and Magnus decided not to risk it. It cost him some hours, but not the win. 🙂
Good work by magnus, that is the sort of tenacity that marks out the great from the good - I can imagine lots of draws being agreed in those sort of positions. It is amazing, how often a grand master will push and push even though it is likely their efforts will be wasted (as was very nearly the case here) especially in endgames.
Does anybody else think he will be the next player to break the 2800 mark?

With the way ratings are inflating, there will come a day (in the not too distant future) when all the worlds elite players are rated over 2800 and 2700 will just be those players currently in the mid 2600s who have gained extra points from those below.
In the ECF rating system, the opposite is true - and the stronger players are dropping lower and lower in the ratings tables. There is talk of a rating correction this year, which would be quite handy as I will gain some extra points which should offset those lost when playing under rated (but good) opponents.
