Is there any way of deleting an unused account? I recently discovered a player who has two accounts, but they did not overlap at all - he hasn't used the first one since March 2006 and he created the second in July 2006. Also, he has subscribed using his second account. My interpretation of the rules would suggest that he would get kicked off the site if it was reported, but it seems over the top in this case.

That's like getting a fresh start which is not right. Everyone would want a fresh start then.

I know there have been cases where someone left and later came back with a new account for some reason (for example forgetting their old user name), and it seems that the site owners don't mind much as long as the two accounts are never used at the same time.
Still,I don't know. I you forgot your password or something then okay.
But if you do it because you want a fresh start then it's wrong.
If I could get rid of my first year games on here, I would have a rating of at least 1900 and only one lose to a 2200+ player.
That would be one nice looking graph! 🙂

Originally posted by wormwoodI think if you ask Russ, or one of the other site admins, nicely they'll change your username.
if there's no overlap, and no abuse, they usually let it be. some people have for example created new account because the first one had their real name as username. changing a handle just for fun isn't tolerated though...
The thing is that someone who leaves the site and then comes back normally finds themselves with a rating of 900 or so, depending on the number of games they left incomplete. So starting a new account bypasses the work of getting your rating back to something realistic. While I certainly don't think they should be kicked off the site, they aren't doing Golden Condor's (et al.) trick to get a rating of 3,000, or otherwise cheat; I also feel that if you are going to leave and come back you should put up with having to get your rating back to it's former state without the benefit of the provisional ratings system. The log in is via an email address and a password (which the site admins will send to you if you forget it) not by a username, so forgetting isn't really an excuse.
Edit: Although in his case I'm forced to admit that the provisional ratings system wouldn't give him that much of a boost...

I certainly enrolled twice with UChess because my user id and password did not seem to work when I went back.
Surely the main point of this condition is to stop non subscribers playing unlimited games for free. Once you subscribe having 2 accounts deliberately becomes pointless although there could be a valid reason (e.g. you want to use 1 to play serious games and a 2nd to try out experimental openings although I guess you could play these as unrated games)
I hadn't considered that rather obvious reason for wanting more than one account, i.e. for non-subscribers to be able to play more games at once.
I think it would be a good idea to be able to close accounts, but keep the profile etc. there so their results can be seen. In cases where someone had started an account and then forgotten the password it would have to be an administrator who closed the account, but otherwise I don't see why a user shouldn't be able to close their own account if they didn't want to play anymore.
At first I thought the "no fresh start" argument was spurious, but on reflection I can see how it might cause problems if people (non subscribers) started a new account every time they lost a game or two!
Originally posted by Fat LadyAnd that is what my problem with that is. If you don't lose your first 20 games, or say you lose a couple to decent rated players, your initial rating would be very high.

If you lose, well restart. Just like playing a game, you don't like the way it's going, restart.
As for opening multiple accounts to play more game, sure but would someone really want to play a lot of games and not have them counted. Meaning, you have 3 accounts, 6 games each. You will all 18 but all 3 of your accounts will have say ratings of 1600 each instead of 2000 or something if you had played all 18 games on the same account.

The banned players profiles used to be intact and there's no reason that it shouldn't be possible to leave either the profile intact or a different message for self-deleted accounts. Their results are still intact though. The problem is that it's not in the sites interests for people to make a habit of changing accounts, so I can't see them wanting to change anything, just turn a blind eye as long as the player isn't taking the proverbial.
