i may be entirely wrong, of course, as this is just an idea
I have heard that music and math are closely related in the manner that music can help a person's understanding of mathematical concepts
I also have heard (and strongly believe) that a firm understanding of math principles can improve a person's general understanding of chess principles
of course, i do not intend to mean that someone can read a math book and BOOM be better at chess... I simply mean that the concepts will be easier to understand... or something to that degree
My best friend is pretty good at chess and he says that listening to music while playing chess is bad.
Is my friend correct? Or will music help at all during a game?
im new to the forum, so if i left any holes in my question, please ask

Personally, i love listening to music and i love playing chess, but i cannot concentrate to the game while listening to music... so i agree with your friend about that one..
Dunno about the other stuff but common sense would lead us to believe that studying mathematics improves your memory and calculating ability in chess and vice versa.
Music does have a certain sense of 'spatial awareness' that is arguably similar to chess. I don't know about listening during a game, though.
I think it would depend a great deal on the KIND of music. There's a reason why they call the ability of music to temporarily raise your IQ 'the Mozart effect' - the original experiment actually tried several different types of music and the results differed.
If you're into classical music, I'd try composers like Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms and Faure. In my experience, chamber music is particularly good for achieving the desired result (although I've not done it with chess) - string quartets, piano trios and quartets, etc.
If you're not into classical music, I'd try getting into classical music. 😉
Originally posted by orfeoI read an article years ago on this. There is a correlation between high Boroake (sp?) music and chess. And, I can tell you from personal experience that my win % is roughly 25% higher when listening to classical music. Just stay away from Wagner. Chamber music does seem to be the best. Try Night Music, by Mozart. One of my favorties. Or Fur Elise, by Beethoven. Try it out, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Just stay away from Metal. That's for speed Chess lol

Spice Girls has an universal effect on improving brain activity. try it.
Sometimes when I play chess with my friend from music academy we listen to all kind of music. From Beethoven Symphonies to metal music or 50cent. But it doesn't help. I think there really isn't any obvious correlation.
And if music is really good, it could even distract you...
That is my case and opinion though. Since I have professional deformation, and I am in love in classical music, I can't listen to it passive, so often between some tactics calulacting i shout "Listen to this culmination, unbeievable, it's fantastic!!"
... So that doesn't actually help :-)

and a lot of ppl have recommended Chamber music (whatever that is) as possible the best
so, since most ppl universally agree that while in a game music is bad...
would it be useful when just studying?
