So, I got a new computer over the weekend and broadband to boot. So I've been doing nothing but playing online chess here, GK, and FICS. Also I've been giving sobriety and enough sleep a whirl, but oddly, despite this good behaviour, my rating in all arenas is dropping again. I'm not very good, I'll admit, but I enjoy the game to the point that despite it I display many of the traits of addiction. Also, I used to see things that I now miss - Game 3383650
The question is: Should I give up and join a twelve step program? Am I doomed to a lifetime of checkers? Or, maybe I should just give it a rest for a while.

@ Bad Wolf - Who says I haven't already gone crazy? 😛🙂😏
Here is something that you might consider. Don't "play" chess for a month. But, in the meantime, solve, say, 4 chess problems a day. Start with a mate in 2 and then work your way to mate in 5. Study the recurring themes in each problem. If you worry less about winning games and spend more time on the aesthetic value of the game, you will see an improvement in no time. Good Luck and Good Chess!
Originally posted by AlphaAlekhineGood advice I'm sure (in fact I know) but if it stops being fun (i.e. - I stop "playing" ) then I won't (probably) be interested in learning at all. I'll try this instead - I'll still play, but I will do the four problems a day and study the themes therein... think that might work?

Also, I'm actually not so worried about winning as long as the game was good. The reason I posted was that the game I listed above was so obvious and is rather fresh (lost just today) and its not the first one today to end due to a ridiculously stupid oversight.
I used to play on RHP, Fics, GK, and with friends OTB. And when you play WAY TOO MUCH, it is normal that your concentration decreases. After ten blitz games in a row on FICS i noticed that I start to play like moron, just putting pieces somewhere without thinking or looking for a cheap attack, then blundering the queen. That kind of chess is stupid.
If you want to improve, take good chess book study it an hour daily, play chess for another hour. You will progress much faster that hanging on various chess sites all the day like some kind of psycho, only to notice that after year of playing in that way, except losing your life, you even don't improve.
Believe me, I know it from my own experience 🙂
I am still chess junkie but controlled one!
