Man, i keep recommending this move to all french players. You gotta play it anyways so get it out there right away.

f6 that early just weakens your kingside and leaves your king exposed.

A sorry, you were talking about the white side.

For white, 3.f ...[text shortened]... ens up the king etc...

3.Bd3 or 3.Nf3 is what your are looking for but i would go with 3.Bd3
This is exactly right. I can't remember the last french game I saw where black doesn't play
1. e6
2. d5
and if it's not an exchange variation
3. c5.

Certainly true in the advance variation but in the classical system (3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bxe7 Qxe7) you have to prevent Nb5 first or the knight gets to d6 and is really annoying!

I'm not sure what your getting at? I saw a lecture on ICC i believe which showed a knight on d6 but they were saying don't worry about it. The knight just looks good there and from the position they showed ya it was just pretty looking but didn't do much.

3.Nc3 hit back with 3...c5 right away if you don't want to go for the winawer with 3...Bb4.

No way. 3...c5 is HORRIBLE in that line. It's been played 8 times that I can see with 7 wins for white 1 for black.

[Date "2-6-2006"]
[Round ""]
[White "Eddie Li"]
[Black "Luke McMullan"]
[Result "*"]

1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3. Nc3 c5
4. exd5 exd5
5. dxc5 Bxc5
6. Bb5+ Nd7
7. Qxd5 , for example.

Play 3...Nf6 (Classical, my fav) or 3...Bb4(Winawer).

Sorry, I switched from 3.Nc3 to the tarrash and I got confused.

3.Nd2 c5

with the 3.Nc3 line you are right, my mistake.

3.Nc3 c5 loses a pawn. Edit: Never mind, I missed the posts above.

I had the knight get to d6 in a game over the weekend and it really restricted my play. I managed to get rid of it and eventually won after a blunder from my opponent (losing that knight actually!) but I'd play a6 in that position first in future. Fritz evaluates the position as 1.5 pawns better for white after c5 for what it's worth.

I got this played vs me the other day but I have no clue what to do against it. If you play g3 Qe4+ Qe2, he gets rook but after Nf3 his queen is out of play for a few moves. Is it really worth sacing a rook for that? I dont know what to do so any help = thanks!
Thanks for the trap, I'm going to study this and get back to you. Traps are always good to know. 🙂 I wish I had a traps and zaps book. I need to buy one of those.

I don't think its very helful. If your white, you're not going to play f4, bad move. If your playing black, then first f6 is a bad move, and second you can't expect white to play f4.

Well maybe in blitz white would play f4 if he wasn't paying attention.
