Why dost thou converse with that trunk of humours, that bolting-hutch of beastliness, that swollen parcel of dropsies, that huge bombard of sack, that stuffed cloak-bag of guts, that roasted Manningtree ox with pudding in his belly, that reverend vice, that grey Iniquity, that father ruffian, that vanity in years?

LOL. I'll bet you're shocked that someone actually backed you up for a change, even if they recanted their position a few posts later. 😀

I think there is a simple alternative to address the concerns of players who do not use or intend to use openings databases or other reference materials: A field in the player's profile that captures whether he or she intends to play as in OTB (i.e. using only his/her memory) or not. This way, a player can filter out db users from the search feature. And of course db users can filter out play-as-in-OTB players.
However, I'm now convinced that is not fesible to create a new class of tournments and clan challenges where openings databases are not allowed. As Kepler pointed out, there is no way to enforce this.
But I recommend introducing random chess tournments and clan challenges, and the openings issue becomes a non-issue.

I want a field for 'players who refuse to use en passant'. and tournaments.

Nice try kbaumen, but you ignore at your own peril the several hundred point difference between using a database online and playing real OTB chess. and any idiot can point and click their way through a database, your ignorance is astounding. It's just a way to dance dullminded incourageous stooges (read : trust me they exist) through an opening into the middegame.

What? I just explained the proper way to use a database. You're the one who's being ignorant here. You don't even try to understand what they're meant for. For example, a volleyball is really meant to play volleyball with it, not football or basketball. A database is a study tool, not "a way to dance dullminded incourageous stooges through an opening into the middegame", though some people use it that way.

Well, perhaps you should look at your own mistakes during the game, not at how the other player chose to play. Of course that's only if you want to improve.

Wrong.

Stumble some more big guy.

For those that don't have any appreciable chess skills, using a database is just a way to dance dullminded incourageous stooges through an opening into the middegame and nothing more.

You think these are the only people that use databases? Some guys like Gert Jan Timmerman or Arno Nickel or something don't use databases? Oh yeah, they are playing like crap, so they need help. Pussies.

P.S. They're not the only ones like that.
