Can someone go through some games of mine from when I first started at this site and some of my recently played games and see if I'm improving any?

Your rating fluctuations have remained about the same so if there is any improvement it doesn't seem to be registering in the scale that measures it.

When you break 1400, you'll know that you've improved.

I looked at Game 3597339 and would like to ask you why :-

- after 1. d4 e6 2. e4 why not play the French with 2..d5

- why play b6 then give up the light coloured bishop

- you went a piece up and blundered in allowing him to recapture it back. Once you are up materially, endeavour to stay up.

Don't worry you can improve if you read the getting to 1400/1600 threads.

In general 2...b6 is playable, but I would not advice to players below 1700-1800.

If you follow the game he played b6 and then Bg4 giving up the Bishop. If you are to play b6 why not keep the bishop to protect the light squares?

could be you've improved, but your weak tactics mask all the effect. everything else is futile until you can keep your material safe. I had that problem in the 1500's, then I started doing blunder check on every single move and my rating shot up to 1600's immediately.

eliminating those simple 1-move blunders take you a long way. but it isn't enough to try hard not to drop stuff. it just doesn't work. the quick cure is blunder checking all your material religiously every single move, however obvious the move. in addition to preventing blunders, it teaches you to be better aware of the whole board.

the slow cure is tactics, tactics, tactics. it takes a lot of persistent, daily work, but you can't really survive without it. so better start right now.

I looked at one of your first gamesGame 3058818, and then the most recent one you playedGame 3597339. I noted that in both games you left pieces en prise, missed some reasonably simple tactics, and demonstrated little to no opening knowledge (stuff like moving the same pawn twice in an opening after only moving the piece 1 square to start is unusual). You also moved into mate in your most recent game, something that demonstrates a depth of less than 1 move. It seems to me that either chess isn't your game, or you need to spend a little more time before moving (probably the second one). Overall I see some improvement, but a little bit of effort could see your rating climb quite quickly.

Edit - If you want a practice game send one over... so long as it's 3-7 or longer, I can give you a few tips if your interested (if you make the game unrated I'll even talk you through in game strategy and stuff).

I've given this advice before as well. If you honestly care about improving, listen to it.

the only argument I can think of for it is.. to obtain 2 Knights in a closed position? But I don't think black had minor pieces in mind when he played Bxf3

I don't know openings. I thought I was trying some sort of QID or something. Like I said I don't know though.

I gave up the light squared bishop because I've been told that it is a good trade in a closed position.

Seems like black moved pieces without any plan.
