Sorry I gotta ask, but what is "k"?

Originally posted by TippedKingI can't let this one go by unaddressed. I've gotten pretty caught up in chess this past year (ever since a friend introduced me to correspondence chess at ItsYourTurn.com). Chess is awfully fascinating and a ton of fun, as I'm sure you will all agree. But I also can't shake the notion that's it's just a bit crazy spending so much time moving pieces around on a board, not to mention the time spent THINKING AND PRACTICING moving pieces around. Surely putting in hours and hours into chess, as fun as it is, is just a bit insane, no? Yet getting involved in Russian politics, in an effort to help rescue millions of people from the oppression of totalitarianism -- surely this is NOT insane, but absolutely sane, to the point of being noble, valiant, heroic. Someone once said that chess is the royal waste of time. I do love playing this game, but also suspect that it IS the royal waste of time. But doing what you can to help others -- and in Kasparov's case, this could mean millions of others -- this is assuredly NOT a waste of time, NOT insane, but something even higher than sanity -- dare I call it "virtue."

I dunno. Kasparov seems pretty sane to me.
I am not sure about this. Anyone who gives up being the best in the world at something only to choose to get involved in Russian politics probably has at least a little insanity 😉

While that appears to be true in the upper echelons of chess, it fails in the lower. Most serious amatuers (1400-2200) are extremely sane and relativly skilled at chess.
Someone who devotes enough time to become a 2200 is a little strange in the head as it is.
