I just browsed the Open Invites page (June 27, 10 :15 am GMT) to find an opponent with an invite close to my rating(1500).
Out of the 11 invites I could qualify for only 1, that too from a 1200 p player seeking a >1500 opponent.
Almost all oponents are asking for replies from players above 300-400 their rating points, Shocker came from admw (1247) asking for 1600-2500 players.
Originally posted by PrashantI think this challenge option was probably brought in to prevent p1200 accepting games from subscribers.

Looking at the open invites now i also only qualify to play p1200 s
Give it a few weeks and i think thing will go back to normal
I also pushed for the ratings range, assuming that most people were like me and wanted to be able to play people within their own skill level instead of being hit up by 1000-rated players looking to get lucky and high-rated players looking for a confidence boost.
Apparently I was wrong. Instead of people looking to develop their skills, RHP is apparently full of wannabes looking for bragging rights. It would be funny if it weren't so pitiful.
I'm going to continue to post open invites the way I had intended. I hope that our more talented players ignore these arrogant little twits and leave their challenges unanswered. Respect has to be earned imho.
I just registered here last week and maybe this is a dumb question, but why do so many players refuse to play provisionals? I could see not playing someone without any games i.e. figuring it might be a mismatch, but there are a number of provisionals with 5-15 games and excellent records. Could someone enlighten me?
Provisionals are wild cards. They may be second accounts of established players, or someone new with a LOT of talent who just hasn't worked their rating up yet. As a result, if you've built up to a 1300 or 1400 rating and take on a provisional, you can get your butt whupped and have your rating take an unfair beating because theirs isn't accurate.
Taking on a provisional player is like offering up your rating to the chess gods, because you won't benefit much from beating them but you'll take a whopping hit if you lose. Classic no-win scenario imho.
As for taking on rookies, there's lots out there who start games, decide they don't like it all that much and abandon them. Nobody likes abandoned games.

1) Aren't second accounts against the rules? (I realize that there's no way to enforce this, but aren't we on the honor system for other rules as well);
2) Again maybe this is a dumb question, but what is the big deal with the ratings? Do you gain anything by having a high rating? Even if a provisional rating isn't accurate, so what? I thought the idea of the site was to play chess, not worry about a rating. I mean I want to win every game and have a high rating but I'm willing to play whoever wants to play me (subject to number of games).
3) Your point about rookies is well taken and I too will hate it if someone abandons a game (especially since it means I have to wait 10 days to claim a win I probably don't even want), but, hey, if nobody plays them how will the site ever grow and thrive? And if rookies only play each other won't their ratings be even more "inaccurate".
These are just observations; I don't mean to make any waves and I love the site and intend to subscribe. So if all the regulars figure I'm just a new guy so what do I know, I'll just keep playing however wants to play me.

1) Rules? BWAH-HAH-HAH-HA! Yes, in theory we're all honourable people and we all like and respect each other. In practice, some people are just jerks and there isn't much you can do about it. Thanks for the laugh, though. π
2) When I started, I wanted to do two things. Get an accurate assessment of my skill level and play people better than me so I can improve. I learned two things. It's VERY tough to evaluate your own skill level when you can't be sure of who you're facing. Also, if you don't know how good you are, you can't tell who's better.
Now what I tend to do is try to pick up pointers where I can and set my own goals for success. My rating relative to others isn't all that important to me, but I use my own rating level to evaluate my own play. So yeah, it matters to me when I take a beating from a wolf in sheep's clothing.
3) When I was a rookie, I challenged (surprise) other rookies and other people in the 1100-1300 range until I started to develop and establish myself. There's always plenty of rookies around so they're not hard to find. Once you're established, most anyone will take you on... so what's the big deal about starting slow?
I'm just speaking for me, and I can't explain why anyone else thinks the way they do... but that's how I feel about it. Don't worry about making waves. If there's on thing I've learned on RHP, it's that confidence has as much to do with success as talent.
Good luck to you... and if you're in my rating range when you graduate from provisional, throw me a challenge. π

1)rating not defined means that you can find a very weak player(not interesting match)or a very strong one (getting slaughtered)
2)if not a subscriber, the provisional in many cases make some moves and leave the site, making you wait for an unwanted timeout victory.

I don't think I have a confidence problem (the reference to "not making waves" was out of respect for the people who maintain this great site). In fact, when I graduate from provisional and have a higher rating than you I'll still challenge you!π

A high rhp rating will get you a 6 figure salary, godlike dominion over the entire universe and if you're really lucky it might even get you laid.
Seriously,I don't understand all the fuss about provisionals.I don't know how the rating system works with provisionals, but I've played a few provisionals, lost to one and it didn't seem to hurt my rating much.
Sir lot.
