Or will your opening strategy depend on your very best traps?
What will you do if your opponent has more traps (is more trapped up) than you?
LOL
Here's a nice trap I found and have used twice against the King's Indian Defense
1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 g6
3.Nc3 Bg7
4. e4 d6
5. Bg5 O-O
6.Nf3 Nc6
7.Be2 e5
8.dxe5 dxe5
9.Qxd8 Rxd8
10. Nd5 Rc6
11.c5 Rxd5 (11...Re6 12.Nxc7 forking the rooks)
12.Bxf6 Bxf6
13.exd5 and you're up the exchange
Oh, and by the way, it won't do you much good to memorize traps, at least in my opinion. You should memorize principles, instead of trying to score cheap victories over your opponents that don't teach you anything.
Traps won't do you much good unless you're opening specific. I play the black side of a KID defence, so I've found a couple of interesting traps.
In the Four pawns attack with locked pawns, white has this manuever. Note, don't try this if white hasn't moved his f-pawn. The possibility of Qh4+ is essential.
1. d4 Ng8f6 2. c4 g6 3. Nb1c3 Bf8g7 4. e4 d6 5. Bf1e2 O-O 6. f4 e5
7. fxe5 dxe5 8. d5 Nb8d7 9. Ng1f3 Nd7c5 10. Qd1c2 Nf6xe4 11. Nc3xe4 Bc8f5 12. Be2d3 (12. Nfg5 Nxe4 13. Nxe4 Qh4+) Bf5xe4 13. Bd3xe4 f5 and black's up a pawn.
In a KID with locked pawns, and where white has played Bg5, the following can come in handy.
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 O-O 6. Be2 Nbd7 7. Bg5 e5 8. d5 h6 9. Bh4 g5 10. Bg3 Nxe4 11. Nxe4 f5
Opening traps are only applicable for a very small segment of the game. Why not learn more useful, general "traps" using pins, forks, skewers, double checks etc. Tactics are really just complicated traps which you form as you make your way through the game. Once they are mastered, you will be able to find traps in the opening, endgame or middlegame with ease. A good way to start is to do a few excercises on the Chess Tactics Server.
