What is the longest book opening?
Of course, you could argue that this is just a variation of Classical Queen's Gambit.
I consider the Ruy Lopez variations to begin after white's Bishop move 3. Bb5., so it isn't so long.
so far all openings mentioned I can trace out to about 10 or 11 moves. I would find myself hard pressed to try and play Grunfeld as White, my queen likes to hang back a bit longer.
If I am not playing an English I am probably playing a Sicilian... and no way I would go more than 6 (if I am lucky) moves before leaving book.
Working on it and thanx for the neat opens to look at.

I usually don't go far into book opens unless I am somehow lucky enough to make the right move at the right time. Any time you want a game you can tell me how I did with the open. Also, If I was playing white I guess it would be an English game... I almost never lead with a King Pawn.
