The Slav Defense (1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6) is an excellent defense that I have been using off and on for over twenty years.
At master level and above the Exchange Variation (3 cd cd) has a reputation for Black having no better prospects than drawish equality if White is in a peaceful mood.
In livlier defenses like the Tchigorin Defense (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6) it is harder for White to steer toward calmer waters.

honestly i've been playing king's gambit for a quite awhile now...but now i find it really messes up both white's and black's position. such as fischer said in one of his books dedicated to just the king's gambit.
He claimed 3...d6 busted it - he was wrong.
