Always push a passed pawn unless your opponent has a pawn that can be pushed past your last pawn as I have just learn t { probably) at my cost. This is a game in progress - you know the rules

It is always foolish to make rules that use the word 'always'.

Connected protected passed pawns are very strong, as long as they are left connected and protected... you have to choose the right time to start your move, which may not be right away.

What about something like this:
Always think before you make a move.

Perhaps not.

I recall a game I had a while back. My opponent told me he wanted to play 1.Bh6.

(not the exact position but very close to it. The bones are there.)

He thought about it and saw my threat of Qa3 so played 1.Bg6
intending to protect b2 with Rook c2 - he lost as in the following game.

What he failed to realise is that after 1.Bh6 I do not have time for 1...Qa3
Because White is threatening Qh8 mate.

So sometimes it's best to follow your instinct and NOT think before a move.

It's often said that on multiple choice tests, the first move - um, answer - that seems right is usually the right one.
