I like to think of pawns as a fence. the pawns advance and annex more territory for you, while fencing off that ground. If your pawns sit still, you'll die of suffocation.

I have discovered that pawns are good for attack and defence. The pawns are a support unit that hold your game together and aid your men and allow them to be more effective. Pawns aid your King in both defence and may even aid him in assulting the enemy King. If you never learn how to use your pawns you will never learn how to use your men effectively.
