can anyone explain to me why Nigel didn't play Qg8 instead of Rh7 in the end? Its like they intended to draw the whole time.

Probably it is not as hard as it looks.
    What about this:
Qg8 xc5 (no mate because d6 is free now)
Qe8+ does nothing, the king can run away and black still has the bishop
    0-1

    au contraire!

    1.Qe8+ Kd6 2.Qe6+ Kc7 3.Qxf7+ Kc8 4.Qe6+ Qxe6 5.fxe6... this doesn't seem worth a try to play against a man in time trouble?

I think 3. ... Kb8 is a bit better because white has no checks. ("check all checks" -GP)
and after 4. Qe6 Ka7 white is pretty much forced to exchange queens in a lost position. An alternative is hard to find for me anyway.
