I want to know which pieces can force a checkmate along with the king in the end-game i.e. after pawns of both teams have gone and the opposite side in only left with a king.

I am sure 2 rooks can force a checkmate and I have also heard that 1 queen along with the king can force a checkmate, please confirm that its true.

Can 1 rook with a king force a checkmate?

By forcing a checkmate I mean that if I play well, I can checkmate the opponent even if he is Kasparov. Got me? Thanks.

    1 Queen certainly can
    1 Rook also can easily
2 Bishops can, but it's a bit tough
1 knight and 1 bishop can, but it's very difficult

Those are the common ones. I don't know about things like 3 knights, but those will almost never happen.

Yup. I'd try to work it out on your own, but if you get stuck http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Chess/The_Endgame

Try it blindfold. Your opponent will find it hilarious.

You can't if you have K+2 knights v K, however, you can if the opponent has K+P but only extreme circumstances - very rare but interesting.

    Game 1601724

One rook, cooperating with your king is enough for checkmate.
