If I know I'm going to lose, should I try and play till the end or just resign? Will playing till the end do any good for the points? I lose less or the winner takes less or something?

Focus on the quality of your game (improvement etc.) not the points. For example, timing out your opponent gives you more points but does not improve your play. I play every game hoping to win, learn something and/or improve my play.

Uhm no, it doesn't.

I think he meant playing out a game adds to your experience and not that timing out is worth more than a checkmate, but that timing out is a win which adds to your rating.
I play all clan games to the bitter end, I owe it to the team. If things are lost, I explain that to my opponent and all have accepted it with good graces (well they are winning afterall!)
Playing out to the end offers stalemate chances or, at worst, a chance to see how to win a "won" game, unfortunatly from the wrong side.

If you are only interested in the effect on your rating then.

(1) If you expect your opponents rating to rise delay as long as possible before resigning;
(2) If you expect your opponents rating to fall resign as soon as possible.

Conversely if you expect to win a game then.

(3) If you expect your opponents rating to rise delay as long as possible before taking the win;
(4) If you expect your opponents rating to fall take the win as soon as possible.

Of course your decision may also depend on where you expect your rating to go although if you have, say, 6 lost games and resign them all the order of resignation should have no impact on the end rating (providing your opponents rating does not change in the interim).

However, in the long run this will not matter and your rating will find the correct level.

Not something I can do as I just don't derive any pleasure from playing out a hopeless game and sadly I have no masochist tendencies 😉 But whatever turns your crank. Usually I'll play on a few moves just to test my opp a little, but I can never prolong a lost game more than that. I don't really care what my opps do when I'm winning, as you said, I am winning after all so whether they resign or play it out to mate its the same point (plus maybe an opportunity to improve my technique a bit).

Maybe I wasn't clear and the word *more* threw you off. I did not mean more points than another type of victory. I meant you gain points when you timeout but it does not improve your game, ability, technique etc.

on our level (I hope you don't mind me saying so) there are truly lost games, since it's only a few moves, do like you please.

But if you are just down material there is a chance that your opponent blunders as well.

I like to resign lost games too, I'd rather only focus on games I'm winning.

If I'm losing I make sure I understand why I was losing take the lesson and move on
