i have just been looking at one of my mid-games.

    One in-particular.

my pieces are all over the place.

    Has anyone been here?

    And improved out of it?

    any pointers?

    I always

    remind my pieces

    To stay under control

    on pain of

    execution.

Yes I have. The only advice I can offer is to make sure you have a plan. Once you do, make sure all your pieces play a part in it. One simple plan is when your opponent has a isolated queens pawn, the plan is to control the square in front of the pawn and plant a knight there, onlyy then do you try and win the pawn. After winning it, convert the material advantage into a won endgame.
