Minefields:
Before the game, players writes down the co-ords of two squares
which are mined. As soon as any piece lands on one of the chosen
squares -BANG- The piece is gone.
If it's a King then Game over.
The mined square is active throughout the whole game.
If per chance before the game both players chooss the same
square then that mine is nuetralised. (see I've thought about this).
Possible flaw:
You could end up with positions were both Kings are in check.
Black has just played 1....Bg2+ White played p d4-d5 which stops
the check and places Black in check.
However d5 is mined. BANG! the pawn is gone.
Both King's are in check.
In this case Black wins because it's now his move and he can
capture the Black King.
Opening books would contain which are the best squares to mine.
Against a French player mine e6
Anti London System - Mine f4,
Anti Colle - Mine d3.
Hey you could mine f2/f7 and never get mated by Scholars Mate!
Originally posted by greenpawn34I remember a chess variant where you right down your king's location on a piece of paper. A third party watches over the game and states when a player is in check. It was really weird. 🙂

What do you have to do to have a serious question answered around here?
But seriously, I don't want to change the chess rules. What would I do with all of my out-of-date chess books, chess software, and dedicated chess computers? And what would paulbchmanfromfics do with his 400 chess books? If they want to radically change chess after I'm dead and gone, that'll be OK with me, but not before then. 😵
Originally posted by MilkyJoeI think it would be fun if pawns could sometimes move backwards. They would probably only be allowed to do so once in a game and providing certain conditions are met - for instance there must not be anything occupying the square they were about to move back to.
If you could introduce a new chess rule/move, what would it be? Or is the game perfect? What if you could get rid of one? I know some have been introduced, have any been scrapped? I mean relatively recent changes and not any variants.
If pawns could move backwards all sorts of possibilities would open up and a lot of opening and general theory would have to be rewritten, which might be a good thing.

can give us his 400 book reviews. 😀

I don't remember what the variant was called.
We played everything from bughouse to suicide. I remember one where the pieces where worth money or something. We were too busy laughing to try it out.
I have found that after a few games of atomic chess that it is really hard to play regualar chess. I stay away from variants (except fischer random) for that reason.

What do you have to do to have a serious question answered around here? By all means, have a bit of fun. But moves have been introduced in the past. This is your chance to suggest your own. Or get rid of one you don't like. How about the one where you can take your own piece to avoid checkmate?

It's a cute idea, but face it folks, chess is complicated enough as it is.
I would like to have the rules of FisherRandom to be the officicial rules of chess.
Today much of a game is about who knows the most of opening theory. With FisherRandom tactics kicks in from move one. The discussion about what is best as the first move, e4 or d4, will be obsolete. No more known gambits, gambits would be invented from scratch from every new game.
I vote for FisherRandom rules! (Seriously!)
"In all seriousness, any change to how the pieces move, no matter how slight, would change the nature of the game and all the study that's gone into the game would be near worthless."
Origionally pawns only moved once the e3 e6 e4 e5 players agreed to play e4 e5 instead of the previous. This is how en passant came about. Also queens use to only be able to move one square. The game has altered enough, but since the change wasn't in your time you didn't know that chess has evolved already!!
Originally posted by greenpawn34I've played this variant before but the conclusion we came to was that d5 would be an illegal move in that position so white would have to play something else.

My original plan of mining e8 was vetoed too. 🙁
