I have not got much experience of prison but I know a guy who was involved in a bit of a fight where some psyco he was with attackd someone with a sword and he ended up having to do 6 months for being involved.

Anyway, he mentioned to me that the guys who are in for life sometimes play chess and can take days playing an over the board game as there is not alot else to do with the time but think up every possible move they can before playing something.

I imagine that there must be a prisoner or two on this website who make moves from time to time when they get access to the internet so I was wondering is that really what it is like and are there some good chess playing prisoners?

Also, it is true that if the guards do a shakedown of the cell that you have to hide all 32 pieces up your arse or they will be conficsated?

I once played a guy on RHP from America who wrote on his profile that he was a prison warder. I can't remember who he was now but he also wrote on his profile that chess is popular among prison inmates. I don't know how prison works but it would be highly unlikely for prisoners to have open access to the net.

i play three prisoners and they are the nicest guys in the world. they are so sweet to me and polite and everything. they want me to visit them someday and maybe i will but they are real far away and i cant go there so easy. still, it's fun to play with them and the are all really really good.

Coquette, Ive never known any prisoners but I know just from watching Televison they mostly only read and Play Chess, and I do not believe they have to hide the Chess Pieces, the guards would probably only give them plastic pieces anyway so theres no way for them to use them as weapons or escaping tools, I hope I never find out, Think America has a terrible Prison System try getting thrown in jail in Ireland or Turkey guys will beat you to death in there and the guards dont care they think its a good thing leaves more space.

I guess if you are going to go to prison live in America, and Coquette watch out those Inmates might be nice now but they have there ways to get to people on the outside they are probably creepy people just to warn you.

I'm in a USCF rated correspondence tournament, and one of the competitors is doing jailtime in Pennsylvania. I'm surprised, with how much time I imagine they have to look over possible moves, that he plays so terribly. Another guy in my chessclub (www.westportchessclub.org), who is a USCF master in correspondence chess and has been playing correspondence chess since the '70s, says he plays prisoners all the time in USCF rated matches. Sometimes they're good and sometimes they're not he says. Some of them must have access to the Internet (or books, I guess) because they'll play the beginning like a GM then quickly lose the thread. I know the guy I'm playing against right now *clearly* does not have access to the Internet or books; his opening moves were horrific.

I hope you're being facetious. Yes, I'll bet these prisoners would just LOVE to hook up with you in person.

Jebus. You don't even want to be a blip on their radar, and for heaven's sake don't ever tell them where you live.

When I played in the BPCF (British Postal Chess Federation) in the 70's, (we actually sent moves, and 'if' moves on a postcard), I dreaded drawing someone c/o 'HM Prison Wherever'... because they had the time, and nodoubt the inclination to play well. They did.

Over the years I’ve played a number of postal games vs. prisoners and they’ve been no different than any other opponent. Some people won’t play them because they have your name & address but I’ve never had one show up at my house. The last guy was rated about 1950. Volunteered that he was in for armed robbery. I filed a t/c when he disappeared but he eventually turned up at another prison halfway across the country so we continued the game. Another time he had his chess stuff confiscated in a shakedown and I didn’t hear from him for a couple weeks. Played the same guy about a year later and he’d been paroled, was living at a halfway house and working in a gun factory of all places. Seemed like a nice guy…better than a lot of people I’ve come across on the Internet.
