How do you go about getting games rated? I have now completed 6 games yet only four have been rated which means my rating has remained at a provisional 1200. Can anyone clarify this?

You can´t, they're unrated now and will remain unrated until the end of the earth (approx. 2015).

Start a new game, make sure it's a rated one and play your little heart out.

how do you know if it is going to be rated or not ? Is there any way to check this or are games rated on a random basis over an unspecified period of time?

My "slow" games are usually 16 - 20 minutes, not hours long and I often face opponents with 1600+ points. Here they would trash me, there I do better. My last game was against a 1900 points player and he was glad to get away with a draw by perpetual check. I was still very pleased with my performance against a 400 points higher player. :-)
