3. d4 is far from dubious. It's perfectly respectable.

3. Bc4 intending the Evans ... If Fritz goes for the two knights then 4. Ng5

d4 scotch. It's all I ever play given the chance!

I prefer Bc4, and we don't need to go all out crazy if Fritz plays 3...Nf6. Just play slow, because we will lose a tactical battle with Fritz if we get into one

The one point d4 does have in its favor is its forcing. Where as things like Bc4 are not so forcing.

It forces, but do you really want to force Fritz?

Yes. We're making it play the move we want, which in this case cedes the center.

greyeyes,

are we voting yet or not?

If so, mark me down as the #6 vote for 3. d4

We'll always vote in a seperate thread and keep this one for the analysis, debate and grrrr.

There is a thread to vote for move 3 now. Should be intresting to see which way this move goes (And who we blame for getting it wrong should we run into trouble 😀 )

Fun fun fun :-)

Is it wise playing a gambit where we go down 2 pawns straight away against the machine?

I don't think so and I won't be voting for the Scotch Gambit but most lines in the Scotch do not involve any gambits.
