Which opening do you believe provides the richest gameplay for both sides? meaning that the position is deep in both tactical and positional play with piece activity and excitement.

For me, I'd have to say the ruy lopez, berlin defence.

Two-knights Traxler variation is most fun for both I think.

I would have to say either Queens Gambit, Ruy Lopez or Sicilian!

Anyway Squelchbelch...........thought you would be playing in The Italian Game Thematic I suggested being such an Evens Gambit and FLA connesiuer!!!

I have 20 G.I.P & that's plenty, thankyou!
I'd come out for a Morra thematic though😀

I would agree with the Ruy Lopez, I would disagree heavily with the Berlin. It's so boring, and the queens come off on move 10 or something! Lame- O.

well there is a line like that, but it doesn't play out that way all the time... I guess the berlin defence isn't always the richest... I'd probably say then that the Ruy Lopez in general is... maybe the marshall variation

I don't think the traxler is too rich in positional play.

So Sicillian or Lopez seem to be the most popular responses. They are definitly very deep indeed.

Another interesting candidate is the QG, although I play the nimzo-indian or benoni defence against 1.d4 so I'm not as versed in it.

Seems a bit like an unanswerable question, but I think many openings qualify for that title. Some I would include: Ruy Lopez, French, Najdorf/Dragon (only for e4)

alekhine or the tango

I'm trying the Modern Benoni & that has quite a lot of scope for piece activity for both.
