It seems to me that I read that Alekhine was asked or told about the Russian people doing nothing but playing chess. Alekhine responed that they have nothing but chess so what else would they be doing. Chess seems to be a national pastime in Russia. I guess that it is possible that there would be a lot of places that the Russian people would play chess. A park would be as good a place as any.
Originally posted by gambit3I can think of better things to do in the park. Play chess, for instance.

When I was on my tour of the world I found people playing chess in parks, on the streets and even on the beach, although I've never found a place in the UK where this happens, I guess we don't have the weather for it. For your info, I played chess in the following places....
On the trans siberian train in Russia (Although it was my set!)
In a Park in Ulaanbaator, Mongolia.
Chinese Chess all over China! (I wasn't particularly good at it)
On a street in Yangon, Burma.
On the beach in Kuta, Bali.
On a street in Ubud, Bali.
In the main square in Santiago, Chile.
In an internet cafe in Sucre, Bolivia.
I was also in St Petersburg and Moscow, but didn't have enough time to seek out the parks where they play chess but I was reliably informed that they really do this.
Originally posted by IraxI suspect it doesn't happen in the UK because some chav to$$er will come along and nick the pieces.

Originally posted by IraxOf course if you're ever in the US, we have parks with chess too - at least in New York City. Washington Square Park is the most well-known, but in the warmer months there are always people playing in Bryant Park too (and I'd be shocked if there's no chess in Central Park).
