I'm a bit of a fan of the Ruy Lopez opening and with it, i've managed to beat quite a few of the harder people in my school pretty comprehensively. this includes the year 12s bearing in mind i've only started year 10.
.
I was just wondering from fans and haters of the Ruy, what do you think the advantage of playing the Ruy as white and also what type of variation of defence do you play as black against the Ruy
I'm also a fan....
1. fast development (castling move 4-5),
2. ideal placement for the bishop on b3
- black can challenge with Na5 (Chigorin), in which case bishop goes to c2. But, black sacrifices some here too (knight on a5 that isn't easily repositioned)
3. Black struggles to put pieces in play. Marshall Attack can solve some of these issues for black, but usually the position is cramped, especially for the dark squared bishop.
The major downside to me is, unlike other openings where SOME lines are booked out to 12-15 moves, the Ruy has theory through 10 moves in MOST lines. Thus, although you still have to decide which variation will work best against your opponent, there isn't much going on early. And all the piece shuffling for small positional advantages....sometimes that is no fun.
As black, I like the Chigorin (after I just dissed it), the Marshall and the closed. Just won a pretty solid game playing 9. Re8 as black. Game 4596134

I got remarkable few people playing this opening against me - so your first advantage is the rarity value. Your opponents might not be so ready for it (seems bizarre but its true - I found Italian, King's Gambit and Vienna much more popular at club level).
Actually that's the second advantage - the first is that you're playing a seriously sound opening.
I preferred the Zaitsev variation as Black - booked up to the eyeballs I was with a couple of options analysed for move 17. Sadly nobody went beyond move 13 against me :-(. As somebody previously said, one drawback is that there's a whole bunch of theory [ although that could be to your advantage if you study harder than your opponent).
I'm not sure there are any disadvantages of playing this line really - other than the mainlines of the closed Ruy Lopez can get quite strategic with lots of shuffling about and hoping to exploit small advantages. If you prefer a direct attack you may be better off playing 3. Bc4 or 3. d4 or some other gambit.
PS: as white don't overlook the possibility of playing d4 on move 5 or 6. Probably not as good as the main lines (in fact I'm sure it's not) but it's good enough and has the bonus of avoiding the Marshall and other nasties your opponents may be ready to spring on you.

What is the Zaitsev?
edit: Nevermind. went to wikipedia and saw it. Is that fun?

Or maybe you just don't have a sense of humour. 😛
More fun than Morphy or Steinitz, anyway!
Berlin is notoriously solid and only fun if you like endgames.
Steintitz (3...d6) can be okay depending on the line you play. I quiye like the lines with ...g6
And Morphy (3...a6) well I think it's quite a broad one to be saying that is no fun
Marshall and Zaitsev variations both arise from the Morphy Defence and they are hardly dull 😉
