Although I'm almost embarassed to admit it, I'm going to add the Ruy to my white repertoire in the upcoming months. My plan is to use it in blitz, then after a week or two in CC with books, then finally in about a month in slow games on PC and potentially OTB at a tournament or club - if I ever go to one. So I've started looking around for books - but haven't seemed to find anything that looks very complete. I know there are a TON of Ruy players on this site - probably too many actually, so how have you guys gone about learning it? I mean watching master games, etc. is great but that won't teach me about the positions.

๐Ÿ™‚ I wasn't planning on it, because this series doesn't have the in depth coverage of an opening that I'm looking for. But why do you say this?

i play the ruy lopez as white just because the opening is pretty easy to me. i keep encountering the marshal attack then i play c3 later in the opening so i'm going to start playing a4 like kasparov instead. i know he has some ruy lopez games. but studying it? well i just learned the opening moves and then after i knew them i tried to watch masters and see what the overall plan was usually its a d4 break. black goes for a d5. although it is not as fun as the sicilian it is a very solid opening with less tactical play.

Yeah, well that's not a help. ๐Ÿ˜›

I'm probably going to use the 8.a4 anti-Marshall, because it's less theory and I don't have to face that attack. ๐Ÿ˜› Maybe I'll change my mind when I know the opening better though. I can't believe an opening so heavily theorized has so little material - although New in Chess seems to have stuff on it a lot I don't want to shell out $26 for a few pages of new theory on one line.

if you have fritz learning all the variations is easy.๐Ÿ˜€. i would suggest you learn it you can have some fun attacking games if you do it right.

I borrows Starting out the Sicilian and I loved it.

I'm not into openings, I think peoples time is better spent else where but it was easy to read and well layed out.

It wasn't very deep but for a 1800 I think it was good enough to get you by.

I have it too - seems like an excellent book, clear, accessible, easy reference - certainly seems good for my level.

I have John Emms book - Starting out: The Sicilian as well.
It is an excellent book for anyone 1200-1600 or so.
It has a gentle learning curve, but offers some deep ideas as well๐Ÿ™‚
However, the Ruy Lopez one has very iffy reviews.

Anyone know any decent books on the Morra gambit?
Can't find the Graham Burgess one anywhere.

Ruy Lopez! Great for black e.g. Game 2266664

I have to admit I only started playing this variation since joining RHP. 1 OTB win against a 165 (2075) player with it also.

Khalifman did a series of books on Anand's openings, two of which give good coverage of the Ruy.

Is it possible to give it up before I've started?!๐Ÿ˜ฒ

A question about the anti-Marshall 8.a4 - how should white react if black plays 7...d6 instead of 8...d6?

That's the Ruy Lopez main line. White usually just plays 8.c3. Then 8...0-0 9. h3 (to prevent Bg4), at which point black has various different options.
