The development is very simple, and Black's position is solid, although I suspect it is not as easy to generate complicated tactics in this system.
Here is my best game with it; My position out of the opening was solid, but the position is somewhat lifeless and I had difficulty constructing a plan. Game 2983325 But we played down a wild line, and the R, trapped B, c-file, passed pawn (if fxe exchange, e file), with the back rank threats and well-placed minor pieces provided, I think, adequate compensation for the queen.
1..d5 is my preferred defense with black. I especially like the Icelandic line, inviting another pawn move with e6, and the way the long castle puts the rook on the half open d-file. Usually you can get the pawn back.
However, I often find myself using a tempo on Kb8 to guard a7. Also, white can sometimes mount a strong attack on black's kingside when black castles long and didn't go with the Qa5 variation.
Overall, an excellent tool for black if black prefers open positions.
I used to hate this opening when I first stated playing chess...an opening that brought the queen out so early must be bad! However it is a very solid opening and offers black good play. There is no move order to get an advantage in this opening as white, both sides have to be alert.
btw....
1e4 d5
2.pXp Nf6
3.c4 c6
best is 4.d4, turning into the caro-cann..which is still solid for black
