I finished this game a little while ago, but for some reason I'm remembering it again.
Game 788330
Never really knew whether offering a draw was a good decision. It seemed to me that:
1) I had come back from a losing position
2) My opponent was higher ranked, and
3) I was far from convinced I could pull off a win given the tightrope I was walking.
I'd be grateful for comments from people with more experience than myself about whether offering a draw was smart.
Originally posted by orfeoI think the draw was reasonable, but I might have played on if I was on the white side of the board. Anyway, you were lucky, that your opponent didn't play 3.Nxe5!

Originally posted by orfeoNo you shouldn't have offered a draw and White should never have accepted it! He's up a piece for cripes sake! With reasonable careful play your passed pawn ain't going anywhere and sooner or later the extra material will tell. I never offer a draw when I'm down material; I think it's gamesmanship. Not saying that's what you were doing, Orfeo, but I'm very surprised White took a draw here - he should win with relative ease.

Originally posted by no1marauderI kind of lean the other way. Just looking at the final board position, I reckon black holds all the aces.

White has a nice situation to stop the pawn from promoting, but both pieces have to stay exactly where they are. If black played right and white didn't play brilliantly, the black rook could decimate white's pawns. And then come back to concentrate on removing the defending pieces.
I think its distinctly winnable for black.

Originally posted by RagnorakNot sure what game you're looking at; White has merely to get his King out to support the advance of his pawn majority on the King side. The Bishop can also support this pawn advance and can be eventually freed to the long diagonal. I'd say Black has no winning chances absent a White blunder and that eventually the extra material will tell.

Originally posted by no1marauderI dunno, I still reckon black could easily go on to win this. I did say that white couldn't play brilliantly though.

If I set it up, do you want to play it out?

I think this possition shoud be drawable for black. But you shoud have played on because its a very intersting endgame.
I quite like the idea of a couple of you trying it out. If Ragnorak and no1 want to slug it out, tell me the results!
Originally posted by orfeoNo word from 2Bit, I'm afraid. That yella streak that he likes to refer to within RHP must be catching. 😉

Anybody else think this is an easy win for white and want to play it out?

I did run it through the Fritz4 in my ChessbaseLite allowing one minute a move (Hey I'm a busy man). By move 60 or so, it did reach a drawn position where White has a passed pawn at h6 and all the other Kingside pawns are gone. Black was always in danger of losing, however, and had to play pretty exactly. So, let me revise my comments: Black apparently CAN draw, but practical chances favor White and as I see no reasonable winning chance for Black, so White should have played on. If somebody with a more advanced engine (where's JW when you need him) wants to run it, I believe they'd come to similar conclusions.
Took the white side against fritz8 on full strength,10 minutes each:
49.Ke2,Rc2+ 50.Kf3,Rc3+ 51.Kg4,Rf3 52.F4,Rxh2 53.fxe5,dxe5 54.Kf5,Rg2 55.g4,h6 56.Bxh6,Kb2 57.Rd1,a1(Q) 58.Rxa1,Kxa1 59.g5,Ra2 60.Kxe5,Rg2 61.Ke6,Ka2 62.e5,Kb3 63.Kf7,Rf2+ 64.Ke7,Rg2 65.e6,Kc4 66.Kf8,Rf2+ 67.Ke8,Kd5 68.e7,Ke6 69.Bg7,Ra2 70.Kf8,Rf2+ 71.Bf6,Rxf6 72.gxf6,Kxf6 73.e8(Q) 1-0
I must say I didn't expect to win it that easy.Wasn't even sure it was a win. There must certainly be improvements for the black side, let me know if you find any.

Originally posted by messplayerYou obviously don't know much about chess. Mephisto moves are pretty much what Fritz4 came up with; but Black looks in more trouble than I remember. I still think my revised analysis is correct and White should not have accepted the draw. Ragnorak, what does Mephisto think? Would he have accepted the draw as White?
Are you kidding?! Black has a great position! He's got Rc2 next move, eating at white's only advantage, and yes that pawn WILL go somewhere because the rook is the only thing that will ever be able to defend it!!! Are you crazy?!
