Afraid so.

I will now claim timeouts immediately the time control is breached as with the new vacation system there is no excuse.

If people are moving elsewhere and not with you they don't deserve to win.

I skull my opponents as quick I can.
They know it, it says so in my profile.

But if they give me a good reason in advance not to, I usually give it a thought before. I'm not totally out of honour.

Solid advice! I will edit my profile.

yeah, what's wrong with a friendly message saying i can't play, i'll be back on so and so date/time? Most players don't do that.. If I timeout without any word to my sparring buddies, I would fully expect to be timed out!

I was away from the site for about three weeks to one month and every single opponent I had skulled me. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with that in the same way that I would expect my opponent to flag me if my flag fell in a tourney.

Yeah, this really sucks, but it's understandable.
3 weeks without computer cost me 300 points last September. [🙁]

What I really don't like is people who insist on playing 1/0 games then time you out Sunday. Why not wait until Monday? Have the decency. Come on, Sunday is for church! [🙂]

church doesnt take all day and if you cant play on sundays you shouldnt take on 1/0 games.

i click it more often than not but occasionally hold off depending on my mood lol

Personally, I think 'skulling' your opponent whilst they play chess with you is inappropriate at best.

in any tournament game if you run out of time you lose instantly... why is this no different? In my opinion they should have a feature that automatically awards a win when someone times out.

I agree, that way the focus is on you making your move on time, not about whether your opponent is 'nice' enough to wait for you. People couldn't get upset at other people for skulling them because it is simply automatic.

Skulling someone is very different that having your opponent's flag fall. IMHO, loss by the skull is not about chess performance--getting flagged IS about performance.

In timed chess, two players agree to a time limit and must make their moves within that limit- take a big think and you must deal with time pressure later- time management is a chess skill. On RHP, nobody times out because they've been thinking the whole time- they forget, are busy, etc. Losing by skull is about not dealing with your computer move in time- no more no less.

That said, I'm fine with folks who skull- it's part of the rules we agree to on RHP.

I'm happy to refrain given a good reason. But I've found those that would have a good reason almost never run out of time anyway.

Most often I find my opponent dropping dozens of games to timeouts due to complete abandonment. Their rating is in a free fall. Perhaps they're a 1700 player with a rating that has dropped to 1100. If you don't take the skull and the person comes back, you'll have to fight hard to gain almost no points. If you lose, you pay dearly, perhaps 31 rating points when the game is actually evenly matched.

My most recent skull was from someone who was stalling in a completely lost game and who had moved in other games.

A simple e-mail or valid vacation notice is enough to keep me from claiming skulls, but that almost never happens.

My views on time outs changed when I spent 12 days in Las Vegas (getting married) then 2 weeks later 14 days on board a cruise ship in the Carribbean and managed not to be timed out in any game.

If I can manage in such circumstances anyone can!

For valid reasons I will give you a break but most of the time people are moving elsewhere but not in your game.
