I think so, but it can be pretty dangerous to beginning players who don't know to play an early e6 to take the teeth from a Bishop at c4 and an early a6 to stop the move Nb5. Most openings books I have read say that the Smith-Morra is unsound and I agree with them.

I've seen a few games of the top players playing it ocasionally.

it seems prety good to me if you know it (just like any other opening, can be played if you know enough about it)

a friend of mine plays birds opening, he is rated 1500 OTB aprox, he has a few wins and drawas with 2000 + players with the opening as he knows almost every line and has played it so much.

(if i tried it against a 1400 player, i'd be in trouble prety quick as i don't know what to do)

i've been playing it in the 7/14 leagues with mixed but mainly good results.

I just checked Chesslab. The SM, after 3. c3 is White won 35%, black 43%. 22% draw. These are masters' games, of course. At the club level, it might even be the opposite because of the preparation factor.

Wasnt there a game in which someone played it against Garry Kasparov and had him by the short and curlies? I think it ended in a draw because the guy playing white missed the winning line. But it surely shows that you can play the opening against anyone and have good/excellent tactical chances.
