Nice game. You outplayed him in the opening and middle game. All you need to do is study the endgame and you'll start stomping A players. 🙂

After looking at the game I'd say that Black was suffering from the 'too many games syndrone'.

there was some chance after the first sac, but I have my doubts. fritz gives -0.03 there, but it only sees 13 moves deep after 60 minutes and I think it's being too materialistic. fritz just can't get deep enough with so much material on the board. even if the direct attack failed, what could it do after white pawns eventually stormed through the wide open kingside? it just can't see that far.

I took about a week to work out the variations here. 10 days for the second sac. black also took a lot of time, so it's not like he played carelessly even with his gameload.

I don't think there was any chance for him after accepting the second sac (if I remember right, he took a week before accepting it). after 17.Kxe6 the fritz evaluation jumps immediately to +0.54 (two pieces down 🙂) for 18...Nc5 (depth 14), and there was nothing black could've done differently, so the change was clearly due to the horizon effect. but the actual move 18...Nf8 lost the game for black. after that I just wrap it up. the third sac loses queen or gets mated, so it's not even a real sac.

even if I can't be sure my analysis was waterproof, I still think this was the best game I've played so far. three sacs and a crushing win against almost 300 points higher rated opponent (back then). whoever said d4-games were quiet and boring? 🙂

Just looking at it very quickly I would say that your 46th move, had it been f7 instead of Kd4, would definitely have won.

You should have won this.

If 46 f7 .. Nd6+;
47. Kc5 .. NXP;
48. a4 .. Nd8;
49. Kd6 .. Kc8;
50. a5 .. h6;
51. a6 wins.

I can't find anything better than 48. ... Nd8 and if black can't improve here it is lost.

Thanks for the advice. I saw that fork and immediately panicked.
