... about 2 months ago. It's a pretty cheap crappy thing, but I can't beat it (after about 30 games!), the pieces are tiny, and it's just plain awkward really. I've nobody to play chess against at home (internet in work only). Anyhow, sat down last night about 8, wife was out, settled down with a nice bottle of vino, electronic chess set and my real chess board... determined to beat this bloody thing! I set up my board and moved pieces relevent to the electronic board, I had a better feel for the game then. Electronic played d4, me... nimzo. Anyhow... I pushed things into an endgame after about 2 hours (taking my time). And I was 2 pawns up with a brilliant position....

..white to move... and me grinning and waiting cos I knew I had the game wrapped up!!!! :-)

nothing happened, batteries went dead, absolutely gutted!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, that's life!

No wonder why there's no one to reply at this post. Except me. Congratulations.

Hehe, that's a win for you I think, if your opponent dies during a game otb then you win, on time though. Has anyone ever been reported as dying during a proper game otb?

no secret here, but best strategy, try to create close position, computers seem to have problems with that

I got one, Excalibur set (~$20)
What level was you playing?
I win on level 1-5 (usually always level 1, unless I mess up really bad)
Level 10 I have never won..
I play it mostly just to see what it's moves are..I really need to start writting this stuff down and re-playing and remembering stuff!
I really need to develop a plan.

I have Openchess for Palm, It is really dificult for me to beat it, but I discovered that I was playing fast since it was also, so I noticed that if I take my time betwen moves even if it replies in 10 seconds I was able to get in a position that the program couldn't handle and blundered, it hapened two times and i lost interest in playing it again.

# For ages 8 years and over.

😀

But computers and programs tend to be really tough to beat - it's hard to focus against them.

This is probably a completely different set than the $20 Excalibur.
I have been playing on a handheld Excalibur LCD unit that I picked up for about $20 (Can) a couple years ago. I really prefer playing with a physical board and pieces though, and it was a little annoying transfering moves between a board and the little display. Since the unit was a little worse for the wear, when I saw a Saitek "Jr. Master" at a store for $30 I decided to pick it up. There was a mistake! The box claimed that it played at an intermediate level, which seemed similar to what the Excalibur LCD claimed when I bought it. However, even when set to think for 5 minutes a move I beat it handily while watching TV or doing other tasks between moves. When set to higher levels it literally takes hours to move. For the most part I really like how the board works, but Saitek ruined it with a severely limited computer. I can't fathom why, with electronics as cheap as they are, a company that knows about chess and electronics would make a product that can't play a decent game without being unusably slow. (Who gets a game like this to play at postal speeds?) Other products on the market in this price vicinity demonstrate that this is possible. And if the answer is that this product is only made for beginners, why include these levels at all? I'd have much rather paid twice the money for something that I can use.

they should be able to easily build smarter and nicer chess computers...My phone is not smart and it has amongst many other games also decent chess program(Chessmaster for mobiles)
So I believe when they build chess computers they should be at least 2x strength of a phone program
