A very intelligent question to do,especially in these days with all the flaming forums and name calling, you could at least ask it in the general forum, you'll surely have a lot of answers(?).
I guess no no one here wants to talk about possible or past cheaters.

i dunno, i know a lot of people on the ICC that use a comp when they're in a tough position, though its only in un-rated games. but still, internet chess can never be totally legit, its just too easy to cheat. its still fun though...i guess

I guess I'll be the first to admit it. I have used a computer before in the past, way before I came here though. I played at a site where we played for rank instead of rating, a ladder system, and I was young and wanted to get high up in the ladder. I was booted when I reached #2 and haven't used it since and never will. Back then I didn't understand chess that much and didn't see any joy in real positional games, since at the time I was simply playing 2 minute games at Yahoo and MSN's Zone and just didn't see how it could be fun. Of course, now I have learned otherwise and take pride in the fact that every one of my games, win loss or draw, are all mine, and mine alone. 🙂

I've never used one to cheat. I have used one when playing correspondence chess with an organization that allows computer use... mostly cause I was too pressed for time to analyze, and I was pretty sure my opponent was also using one. I think looking at the games I've played on RHP will confirm that I don't use one here 🙂 (I've made a lot of moves on RHP that _I_ knew were dumb, immediately, let alone Fritz- I get really busy sometimes, and don't have time to think things through... blitz at a orrespondene pace- D'oh), even though I have only lost on time so far (think I'm starting to hit the rating range where that will change). I regretted using it at the time though... I play CC to improve my OTB game- using a machine doesn't help as much there as doing the analysis myself. On the other hand I will make use of dbs and opening books in my play here.

I never understand all the talk about using books/computers and "cheating".

If you want to avoid all that stop playing this slow version of chess and go to yahoo and play a timed game! (e.g. 12 minutes) problem solved.

It's actually not too likely, unless you are playing someone who just joined, and is on the way up very quickly, and I'll tell you why. The best chess programs are probably not as good at correspondence chess as the best players on this site (though they would likely thump them at OTB play), but they are likely _much_ better than you are, unless your rating is _really_ low compared to your strength. Anyone who uses a computer is likely to be so muh "stronger" than you, that you will never play them. There are some advantages to being a patzer (in which category I will happily include myself).

It doesn't take a computer to find good moves... I'm sometimes really surprised at how much the quality of my opponents moves (here) varies- till I look at my own moves, and recognize that sometimes I have a lot of time to analyze, and sometimes I don't. I have certainly found mate in 5 or 6 in games here, and much longer sequences to win material (though mostly 'in the variations'😉- not so hard when you can move the pieces and have plenty of time.

How exactly would playing a timed game make using a computer less effective?

This brings up the classic OTB vs Internet debate. I will never credit a player over the net if I do not know them and have played them OTB. Way too much cheating, even if you play on yahoo and pogo(which are great sites) you will inevitable run into another cheater. The one's i like best are the guys that move EVERY 30 SECONDS, its so funny, so i take the game and run it in chess master 8000(thats what most of these dumb kids use) and sure enough same moves appeared....every 30 seconds

Funny? That's sad. :'(

I mean, what's the point of that? Where's the fun? The challenge? The satisfaction? What a total waste of time.

Maybe it is kids with over-inflated egos. It reminds me of something:

When I was growing up, I worried about what people thought of me.
When I had grown up, I no longer cared what people thought of me.
Now I'm getting older, I realise that nobody was thinking about me at all.

If you're going to cheat, you're only cheating yourself.
