I'd like some openings that I can look into that take my opponents out of book, preferably in the first few moves.
My OTB opponents ratings will likely be in the 1400-1600 range, 30 mins games I think.

I'm considering the Latvian gambit 1.e4...e5, 2.Nf3...f5 as black, mostly to avoid all those Ruy Lopez's & the Grob 1.g4 as white as an occaisional weapon, though I have my 1.e4 repertiore as white pretty much nailed.

Any other suggestions for openings that offer tactical shots & take the opposition out of their comfort zone early on?

I've trying the halloween gambit at the blitz site. Sometimes it goes well others it don't. But I think that if you really study the lines you could have some serious advantage.

Edit: Game 3816680 This is one game I tried here and my opponent didn't defend propperly and I think he resigned a little bit too early. But I think, with my poor anlaysis powers, that I was about to get my material back 3 or 4 moves ahead and I had a great positional advantage.

You know my answer as white but ditch the Latvian as black - it is $%#@.

Really-
OTB against intermediates with no databases or books?

I like the 2-knights (I'd love to play the Traxler OTB!) but probably way over 50% of the time they'll go 3.Bb5 & I find the black side of the Ruy Lopez difficult.

I have considered this.
It can lead to very good chances for a quick win.
Trouble is, it takes a bit of co-operation from black to play the 4-knights defence.

I don't want to spend too much brain-power on various alternate lines.
I really like the Evans gambit, but very few people (other than beginners) want to play the black side of the Italian game, so I've all but abandoned it.

Yep you're right. But if you want to play the halloween gambit the right to do it isn't 1. e4 it is 1.Nc3.

Against 1.d4, I play the Dutch and I've just started playing Queen's Indian Defense. Those are my recommendations.

Your games are not the best evidence for Latvian gambit. In that game white had extra pawn and more active pieces and as result you got lost endgame, which your opponent managed to lose. How many times must I repeat that 3...Qe7?! is no good move?

Don't worry about me, I don't play 3...Qe7 each time. 😛
