This is a really really broad thread, but I'm just wondering how you tell when there's a brilliant tactical move to be made. And which openings lead to the most tactical games? I might lose a few at first but I want to really nail the tactical aspect of chess. Any comments, suggestion, training tips, etc. about tactics would be great.

To find a great tactical move, you have to set one up or expose one that is already there, look for possible forks, pins, and discovered attacks. If they won't work now due to pieces in the way or pieces that are defended already, look for a way to move some pieces around to set it up the possibility for one.

I'm talking stuff bigger than 2 move combo's...

Game 3233683

This is brilliant, but how do you 'train' to see crazy moves like this.

If you see any of these in the position, chances are there probably is a tactic there:

1.Weak king
2.Undefended pieces
3.Overworked pieces - a piece guarding 2 things, like queen guarding rook and bishop.
4.Pieces not adequetely defeneded.
5.Weak back rank.

edit: I think i got the FEN

White to win a knight and lose the game- after white takes the knight, ask yourself what you would do here, heres the link to the game Game 2903475

ok, here is a game which involves a little longer tactical sight. looking back on this game either I really knew what i was doing or I was just really lucky, i sacrifice 2 minor pieces for an attack on his king in the open, I win his queen and the game because i saw and used some great attacks, a huge pin, and removing the defender to win my material advantage back plus some.

Start doing tactics and you will spot them easier and quicker. You don't go for the killer tactics at once. You start easy with 1 and 2 move combinations/tactics and work up slowly.

Go to downloads and tactics and you can get 1001 Reinfeld puzzles without the solution.

Great puzzles!

I would have played Re8+ .. but then the best you pull out of that is your material back and maybe a queen or something... what you did was defendable too though... interesting game but i'm still confused

yah .. some good puzzles there.. i find tactical puzzles are often too easy, because the positions are often fake... mate puzzles where the king is already completely trapped and the trick is finding a combo that gives check (and therefore mate) .. what i really like is puzzles taken from real games...
anyways, thanks for the tips guys.

I used CTS (Chess Tactics Server) and have been reading:

1001 Brilliant Chess Sacrifices and Combinations (Hardcover)
by Reinfeld Fred (Author)

It's helps you learn patterns and opportunities for sacrifices, combinations, and mating attacks.

Anybody just study masters games? It seems like a good idea, but then again, masters don't make all that many mistakes that can be punished with tactics.

They do make such errors, they are just less likely to be the 1-3 move tactics you see at our level.
