Wouldn't it be fun having some unrated freestyle games or team games similar to the one over the weekend on playchess?

Chess programs, multiple computers, dbs, book, outside help etc... Anything goes.

I was reading about ZackS from last year, amazing, and one of our club memebers was played this weekend and was keeping us up to date with reports. Sounds very fun. He finished 3.5/8 but keep in mind Namkura finished 2/8 and our club player played Namkura and ZackS in this tournament over the weekend.

This is also known as Advanced Chess depending on who you talk to.

I know there are a few engine-engine (declared not like say IM31 playing meman) played on the site. I know RTH and Phlab have one in progress.

There is a problem however, Game Mods can't see game names. There is no way for them to tell which games are friendly games played under freestyle/Advanced rules and which are normal friendly games.

Also remember, databases and books are already allowed here.

Ah I heard the term advanced chess used during Anand + computer vs other GM vs computer.

I think of advanced chess as limited computer usage. I think in the above game each side was allowed to use computer help for only 3 move I believe.

What about Unrated games though? That doesn't seem like a problem and it would be more fun having several different programs and computer and maybe some team members.

Although one problem could be that it would be so much fun that you continue doing it in rated games now and then and ya "boot, out you go."

There is no limit to computer usage in Advanced Chess. The games you are thinking of were likely Anand vs. Kramnik with each having access to Fritz, Junior and Chessbase. The games were 1 hour for all moves (Kramnik won game 3 the other 5 were drawn).

If the Site Admin gives this kind of play the ok (for unrated games only) then I think it could be interesting. In fact I'll pit myself with Fritz8 and my own tuned database against all comers (not all at once though, I don't want my engine running 24/7). Until then I'm not going to start any freestyle games.

Familiar but it wasn't anand vs kramnik, the one i'm talking about. I would have rememeber that.

I'm think Anand vs Adams? I distictely recall though that they could only use the computer 3 or 4 time though during the match. How they used those 3 times was up to them. They moslty ended up checking over variations X moves deep to make sure they didn't blunder in the calculation.

But yes the Kramnik with chessbase and fritz etc...does sound familiar.

It would be fun. Sort of like the chessmaster game we got going on.
But it would be more like, say 1 team with multiple computers and programs vs another team with multiple computers and programs.

It's no fun doing it by yourself with 1 chess program vs 1 other person with 1 program. There's yahoo for that 🙂

Do you Yahoo?

Yahooooooooooooo 🙂

While I certainly think that would be fun, teams are unfeasible. Not only do you need some way to communicate and coordinate your efforts with your teammates, what happens if you cannot agree on a move? I think that that would be a huge amount of work for Russ and he has more pressing issues.

Although it may not be workable with the implented game code here, I think that the most fun chess variant is "Doubles" (there may be other names).

There are two teams, A and B, with two players on each team.

They sit like this at two boards:

A1 [ ] B1
A2 [ ] B2

The boards are turned so that A1 has White and A2 has Black.

If you capture a piece, you may hand it to your opponent who can place it on any unoccupied square up to and including the sixth rank (but without giving check) instead of making a move.

The first player to win by checkmate or on time wins the match for their team.

For extra fun, play with a bullet or fast blitz time control.

This variant is a favourite of my chess team and is always a good laught, with pieces, clocks and boards flying everywhere. It is funny when inexperienced players are found at the end of the game to have forgotten to pass their team-mate any pieces!

Bughouse, while fun, has nothing to do with what we are talking about.

I think teams for freestyle chess could work as long as there is good communication within the team. Remember timeouts could be 7 days or longer meaning there is plenty of time to discuss, plan and calculate.

This is called bughouse (as XanthosNZ noted) and you play a rather tame variation.

Bughouse is almost always played with 5 minute (blitz) time controls and the only restriction on piece placement is that you cannot drop a pawn on the 1st or 8th ranks. aka You may place a piece to check your opponent.

Back to the discussion at hand, are there any clans that might be interested in a team match? That at least gives you a convienent spot to analyze and converse...

We played that with 4 or 5 boards at the London meetup...hours of fun, but slightly mind boggling ever when sober 😵

Ya I was thinking about team games with good people like clan memeber you get along with or something.

I wasn't even thinking about on here, any blitz site even yahoo at worst!

As for disagreeing. Tough luck. That's one of the reasons ZachS won last year and when they disagree they had problems which showed in their games but they got over it eventually.

Playing any variation of chess with 5 minute time controls seems pointless to me.

As to advanced chess: I think this is a good idea. All we'd need is some way to tell the game mods to disregard such games. All the other tools are available. Team play is possible, but would require a voting system and a private thread, so this is much more difficult to accomplish.

I don't see any real issue in coordination within a team via PM if it comes to that.

I think special accounts for advanced chess could be a solution. so that you could request one from russ, or a special appointed AC-admin, who would grant one. granted AC-accounts could be tagged with AC to make sure everyone knew what they were up against. say, 'Xanthos(AC)' or alike. that way, the games could even be rated, because their rating wouldn't bias anyone's unassisted rating. this wouldn't require any site modifications, only a policy.

another way could be setting up special clans for advanced chess, maybe a clan per engine. team play would then be simply joining that clan. but this one would require that unrated clan-games were made possible, because otherwise it would bias someone's unassisted rating.

probably some kind of a mix of both ideas. I think additional accounts would be compulsory for things to work out.

The Mustangs (at least RedNight, GalaxyShield and I) would be willing to play a team challenge with another clan (or any other set of people who so desire to play us). However, it is the other players preference that this simply be a team game and not advanced chess (aka no engines).

If anyone is interested, please send em a PM.
