I know that there really isn't a "best" Sicilian for everyone. However, in your opinion, which Sicilian do you consider to be the "best." Right now, I'm debating between the Sveshnikov, Dragon and the Najdorf.

BTW: I previously believed that the Najdorf was without a doubt the best Sicilian, but upon buying a book on it, I'm no longer certain. It seems that Black faces incredible difficulties in some lines. Learn more here: http://www.redhotpawn.com/board/showthread.php?threadid=42018

I've played all 3 in tournaments. I am very bad with the dragon (I dislike memorizing tons of theory though sadly I probably know quite a bit now) and was usually crushed by the Yugoslav attack. The najdorf was my choice for many years and is very sound. I just picked up the Sveshnikov and it is definatly my choice, especially in blitz games.

I like the 5...a6 Najdorf but I don't like the 6.e5 move, so I play in between the two.

5...a6 and then 6...e6 like in the svenighen. So after 5...a6 6.Be2,6.Be3 I would play 6...e6 instead of 6...e5.

I'm starting to like the Sveshnikov because it gives Black some activity. I don't like how in the Schevenigen and the Najdorf how White can develop aggressively with moves like g4,f4, and Qf3 etc while Black has to do passive moves such as Nbd7 or e6 etc. But thats just my opinion

I still call it the Nadjorf though 🙂

To me, 5...a6 defines the Nadjorf and anything after that to me is the Nadjorf, althought my book and many others call 5...a6, 6...e6 the Schevenigen but to me its the Nadjorf hehe.

Hate to break it to you but your teacher isn't very good.

EDIT: And he doesn't even play the Sicilian.

Yeah, I noticed that too. If you want to improve, I suggest not taking lessons from anyone below 1600.

I hate (well not really) to say this but doesn't it look like this person only exists to glorify his 'chess teacher' since i have not seen him post without mentioning his 'teacher willray one' lol

Wonder if he can complete a sentence without mentioning this person 😉

As White I hate facing the Sveshnikov the most. The Naj and Dragon are good openings but I know I'm going to get some kind of slugfest and I like attacking me a kingside, win or lose. The Sveshnikov is tricky and weird and tangles up my pieces, sometimes.

Ok, I narroved down the "best Sicilian" for me to the HAD (2 ....g6) and the Najdorf. Which one of these do you think is objectively best and why? IMO so far, the HAD makes more sense, but the Najdorf can offer more rich and complex games.

The best Sicilian is definitely the Sicilian Kan.
