seems very popular here. I have to admit that, as white, I bloody hate playing against it.
On the other hand, as black I almost always play 1...c5 because it tends to lead to more unbalanced and interesting positions.
Any thoughts?

Anyoo, both the french and scillian are playable. I prefer the french because there are basically a couple of ideas (c5 & f6) which give me playable games in almost all variations w/o resorting heavily to books/db.
In a scicillan, I need to know a basic variation as well as all sub variations that white can play, then I need to figure out how to battle against the closed, gran prix and Bb4 lines. It is also very rare to be blown off the board while playing a french, os if white plays perfectly, he may have a small long term plus (space), you have plently of time to organize your counterplay. The biggest trap to fall into with the french is passive play, but I believe that applies to all openings.
I just play 1.d4 against french players and have always gotten better play for myself than otherwise. Easy to do in corr chess because databases solve most opening mysteries.
I mean I could choose to play 3.Nd2 (tarrasch) but why bother with Nd2 if I could play the venerable QG instead.

Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugI've been thinking about switching into more mainstream/acceptable lines and I've considered this, but there's one major problem, that being that I've heard it's inferior to both 3.e5 and 3.Nc3.
I've started tackling the French by using the Tarrasch, seems far more open and tactical then other Frenches such as the Winawer.
My latest Tarrasch: Game 2502572

CMS Master. Where did you get your info? From everything I've heard/played
Nc3 (Winawer/classical) > Nd2 (Tarrasch) > e5 (Advance)

How many games does one need to be willing to play at any given time in order to join?
Originally posted by zebanoOne of the things I picked up and have started to use from our mutual clanmate tengu is 1. d4 e6 then if they respond 2. e4 I can go can go into the french, and if not, I can go happily into the Dutch while successfully avoiding some of the anti-dutch lines.
