ive never heard Morphy called the pride and sorrow-it is wisest to use a persons name
How can you call yourself a chess player and not have heard of Morphy being referred to as "the Pride and Sorrow of Chess"?

Anyone with even a passing interest in chess should have read a potted biography of Morphy, Alekhine, Capablanca and Fischer, the four players who really jump out from the list of pre modern era greats, and every article I've seen on Morphy mentions "the Pride and Sorrow of Chess".

I used to know a chess player called Paul Charles (Morphy's christian names, but in this case Charles was the guy's surname) and we called him the Pride and Sorrow of Hackney Chess Club. He tended to veer a little too much on the "sorrow" side and we were quite relieved when he buggered off to Metropolitan Chess Club (average age 80.25).

I'm saddened by the fact you did not know who the Pride and Sorrow was.

Google him and read up on him. Better still download his games
and treat yourself.

Pride because he left us so many great games.
Sorrow because of what happened to him.

If any player deserves a game in a thread dedicated to Knight
mates then it is Paul Charles Morphy.

Here he is playing in his first tournament.
Marache plays a prepared line that wins the exchange.

Morphy saw through it over the board and produced a beautiful
double Knight mate. The first time, I believe, this had ever been done OTB.

yeah i have all Morphys games I'm just not a fanatic in the sense some ppl are

i like to think of all my knight mates as a tribute to Morphy 🙂 other than that i used to idolize the guy

what is weird , Morphy and I each have an equal number of Knight mates made public 🙂

fancy that

btw its not a double mate.

the tactics behind this are beautiful-but truth is , its just a convenience

i play like that against weaker players and im only floating towards 1300

fyi greenpawm - anyone that has such a mate with knights deserves this thread

post your own before you get on a jealous hate trip 🙂

To quote wikipedia:

"a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion"

I was correcting you on the theme of the double knight mate so I was on topic. I certainly wasn't trying to get an emotional response out of you and I didn't post anything controversial or disruptive.

So I would suggest you quit flaming and step your ego down a notch. I was enjoying the thread since knights are my favorite piece. I was merely trying to be helpful.

PS if you consider my first post as trolling "you're a persistent little bugger aren't you?" it was just a joke.

Here is one my single Knight mate.

Note no other piece involved just the Knight.
As per the thread title 'the joy of knight mating'

'Not the joy of knight with other pieces helping mating'

As in all your first four examples. (the Knight needed help).

Elador posted the first correct one.

(A double Knight mate is one Knight gives check, the other Knight
covers the flight squares - no other pieces are invovled.)

Game 2 will show a double Knight mate I played OTB in 1980.
I threw the Queen sac just to mate with the two Knights.
I first posted that one on here ages ago Thread 94659

😉

Why do you ask that? You said you wanted our knight mates... Never said anything about from our games.

The solution, for those who can't solve it, is

1.gxf6(ep) Kh7 2.f7 h4 3.f8(N)#
.

Oh I get it, the bishop is supposed to be a knight, looks like an error on that board, otherwise with a bishop it would take more than 3 moves.

Nope, it is a bishop indeed. 🙂
